Freshen up Your Home for the New Year

The silly season seems to spin past faster every year, doesn’t it!

One minute you’re planning the handyman jobs you can get done while you have time off, the next you’re back at work, wondering where the time went.

Unfortunately, there’s no more time for all the “I’ll just get around to it next week” excuses that stop us from doing the jobs on our To-Do lists during the holiday break.

Don’t panic, though! There’s still time to get a few little things done to start the New Year off to a bright and fresh start. These quick fixes will freshen up the house and give you an extra reason to celebrate the start of 2016!

A lick of paint

If you don’t have the time to do a whole room, simply painting your front door can make a big difference to the entrance of your home. With a shiny new doorknob and fresh paint job, you will be the envy of your neighbours.

Breath of fresh air

We all know how hot it can get in an Adelaide summer, but did you know how big a difference using a ceiling fan rather than your air-conditioner can make on your electricity bill?

Using a fan can also circulate the cool air from your air conditioner better, so you can go ahead and turn it up a few degrees. You’ll still feel the cooling benefits and use less power.

Stop the drip

Replacing taps and faucets can be a great way to spruce up your bathroom without needing to update too much. However, it can be a time-consuming task for a beginner.

If you just want to fix a leaky tap to save water and stop the dripping, take a look at one of our recent blogs, ‘No more dripping: How to fix a leaking tap’.

Handyman To Do list

Treat your deck

Repainting or refinishing your deck can give it a whole new lease on life. Taking the time to protect outside timber from weathering could also help it to last longer. Take a look at our older blog, ‘Get your outside timber ready for the silly season’ for some tips.

Sometimes though, all a worn deck needs is some company. A nice potted plant, bright cushions on the furniture, or some fairy lights on the railing can make all the difference and brighten it up.

See the light

Adding electric lights to your garden is a great way to create an atmosphere in your outdoor entertaining space at night. Floodlights, statement lighting or other highlights can all help to create an outside space that you won’t be able to get enough of!

If electrical wiring is required, you will need to get a licensed electrician to install it for you so in the meantime, why not make use of simpler alternatives. Tis the season for fairy lights, so most shops will have reasonably priced lights that will give a little twinkle of delight.

Remember that these are just little fixes. While they’ll keep your company happy for summer, regular maintenance and professional installations can really give your home a makeover that you’ll love all year round whilst adding a lifetime of value.
